Signs of Ear Infection in Toddlers — AMITA Health Medical Group

health No Comments »

Is your toddler showing signs of an ear infection? Schedule an appointment at an AMITA Health Medical Group location near you: https://www.amitahealth.org/medical-group/primary/family-medicine

Toddlers are especially predisposed to ear infections because their developing eardrums create a natural breeding ground for bacteria and fluid buildup, says Ryan Fitzgerald, DO, an AMITA Health Medical Group primary care doctor based in Plainfield, IL. And if they’re attending preschool, that bacteria can run rampant. That’s why it’s important for parents to recognize the signs of an ear infection in their children, particularly if they’re pre-verbal.

An untreated ear infection (or recurrent ear infections) can hinder a child’s hearing development and have lifelong consequences, including hearing loss. Proactive treatment is key to your child’s auditory health and ensuring that their developing brains are able to learn how to hear without disruption.

SYMPTOMS OF EAR INFECTION
* Pulling or tugging at the ear
* Fever or high temperature
* Changes in appetite
* Child reports that they feel like “they’re still on an airplane” or “have water in my ear”
* Dizziness
* Headache

COMMON TREATMENTS FOR EAR INFECTION
* Antibiotics (bacterial ear infections)
* Identification of social factors for the infection (at home, at daycare, etc.)
* Antihistamines
* Reintroduction of bottle use to minimize ear pain

Fever in Kids: When to Call the Doctor

health No Comments »

Why children get fevers, and when to call the doctor. https://www.chop.edu/locations

In This Video:
0:26 What is a fever?
0:43 Why do you get a fever?
1:26 Why does a fever make you feel bad?
2:14 Is a fever dangerous?
2:36 What to do when a child has a fever
3:02 Is medicine necessary for a fever?
3:33 When should I call the doctor about a fever?

A fever is a temperature greater than or equal to 100.4ºF or 38ºC. Fever in children is very common. Fever is a normal body response that helps the body fight infections.

The information in this video is for otherwise healthy children older than 3 months. If your child is younger than 3 months, or has a health problem that makes infection more likely, always call you doctor for advice when your child has a fever.

Your child’s temperature is not the most important thing to monitor when your child has a fever. Most of the time you won’t even need to take your child’s temperature. Instead, pay attention to the symptoms your child is experiencing along with the fever.

These are normal symptoms: faster heart rate and breathing; shivering; cold hands and feet; head and body aches; tired and fussy; poor appetite. You don’t necessarily need to call the doctor if your child has these symptoms.

These are abnormal symptoms: extremely sleepy or irritable; trouble breathing; rashes; pain, redness or swelling in one area (like a sore throat or a red, swollen knee); drinking very little or not at all; severely decreased urination; fever lasting longer than 3 days; seizure. You should call the doctor if your child has any of these symptoms, or if your instincts are telling you something isn’t right.

Parents worry that a high fever will cause seizures or brain damage. A high temperature will not cause brain damage, and seizures due to fever are rare.

Video Transcript:
Hey guys. Today we’re going to talk about fevers during infections. It’s actually a pretty common question that shows up when I’m teaching classes as well, and so I thought I’d bring this up so that way we can speak more about it, that way we can really understand why a fever actually happens in an immune response. It actually is a systemic response to invading organisms, okay? It’s not caused by invading organisms.

Our body intentionally raises the core temperature, and that’s simply because the leukocytes and the macrophages are releasing pyrogens which increase the internal temperature. They release these pyrogens, letting the hypothalamus know that it wants to increase temperature in order to combat an invading organism. Our body actually benefits from having an increased temperature. It is with full intention with our immune responses that our immune response wants this to happen, because it actually kind of kneecaps a bacterial infection, or a microorganism infection to the point where it might actually be able to take an advantage of this infection and kill it before it spreads any further.

Basically, what increasing the temperature does is it allows for the liver and spleen to hold onto zinc and iron. What zinc and iron are beneficial for organisms or bacterial growth is that it actually assists that, okay? It allows for rapid growth of bacteria, so when the spleen and the liver are able to hold onto zinc and iron, it doesn’t allow bacteria to grow nearly as much, or nearly as rapidly would be more accurate.

Another thing that allows is increased temperatures allow for metabolic rate of tissues; it increases for metabolic rate increases, so that allows for a lot faster cell repair. When something is damaged, and the bacteria moves onto more healthy tissues because that’s what it likes to feedback off of, increased temperature allows for the increased metabolic rate of tissue repair, and it kind of follows in behind so that way we’re not causing any more damage, or we’re not leaving damaged cells just kind of unattended there.

So, those are the kind of things that a fever can help us. Now obviously, it can lead to a severe dehydration for prolonged infections, and so having a fever initially is very, very useful in order to kind of help the body fight organisms or microorganisms; however, prolonged infections and prolonged fevers can be very dangerous because of the severe dehydration that can precede that as well.

If you have any more questions about fevers during an infection, please email me or give me a shout-out on the page, and we’ll talk soon. Thanks, guys.

Pain Lyrics

[Verse 1]
My mistake
I was too kind to you
Still can’t believe that
This is what you want me to go through

[Pre-Chorus]
It could’ve been easier-er-er
Could’ve tried at the least
Been what you said you gonna be
But no, but no

[Chorus]
You don’t need to take all the blame
Just know you caused me pain, ohhh
You don’t need to take all the blame
Just know you caused me pain, ohhh

[Drop]

[Verse 2]
I’m sorry
You won’t see me anymore
I’ll be gone and checked out
Before you walk through the door

[Pre-Chorus]
It could’ve been easier-er-er
Could’ve told me from the start
You were known for breaking hearts
But no, but no

[Chorus]
You don’t need to take all the blame
Just know you caused me pain, ohhh
You don’t need to take all the blame
Just know you caused me pain, ohhh

[Drop]

[Outro]
My mistake
I was too kind to you

Myofascial pain syndrome is a common chronic pain disorder that can affect various parts of the body. Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by presence of hyperirritable spots located in skeletal muscle called trigger points. A trigger point can be felt as a band or a nodule of muscle with harder than normal consistency. Palpation of trigger points may elicit pain in a different area of the body. This is called referred pain. Referred pain makes diagnosis difficult as the pain mimics symptoms of more well-known common conditions. For example, trigger point related pain in the head and neck region may manifest as tension headache, temporomandibular joint pain, eye pain, or tinnitus.
Symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome include regional, persistent pain, commonly associated with limited range of motion of the affected muscle. The pain is most frequently found in the head, neck, shoulders, extremities, and lower back.
Trigger points are developed as a result of muscle injury. This can be acute trauma caused by sport injury, accident, or chronic muscle overuse brought by repetitive occupational activities, emotional stress or poor posture. A trigger point is composed of many contraction knots where individual muscle fibers contract and cannot relax. These fibers make the muscle shorter and constitute a taut band — a group of tense muscle fibers extending from the trigger point to muscle attachment. The sustained contraction of muscle sarcomeres compresses local blood supply, resulting in energy shortage of the area. This metabolic crisis activates pain receptors, generating a regional pain pattern that follows a specific nerve passage. The pain patterns are therefore consistent and are well documented for various muscles.
Treatment of myofascial pain syndrome aims to release trigger points and return the affected muscle to original length and strength. Common treatment options include:
– Manual therapy, such as massage, involves application of certain amount of pressure to release trigger points. The outcome of manual therapy strongly depends on the skill level of the therapist.
– The Spray and Stretch technique makes use of a vapor coolant to quickly decrease skin temperature while passively stretching the target muscle. A sudden drop in skin temperature provides a pain relief effect, allowing the muscle to fully stretch, and thus releasing the trigger points.
– Trigger point injections with saline, local anesthetics or steroids are well accepted as effective treatments for myofascial trigger points.
– Dry needling — insertion of a needle without injecting any solution – is reported to be as effective as injections.
